Printable recipe cards in 8 designs, 4 x 6 inches, for Thanksgiving, holidays and family recipes

Every family has a few recipes that matter more than the rest: grandma's apple pie, the Thanksgiving stuffing, the cookies that only appear in December. Too often they live on a stained scrap of paper, in a phone note or only in someone's head. Writing them on proper recipe cards keeps them safe, easy to find and ready to pass down. Here is how to start your own recipe collection, and the printable cards I made to make it easy.

Why Handwritten Recipe Cards Are Worth Making

  • They keep family recipes alive: handwriting and little notes in the margin make a recipe feel personal.
  • They are easy to use in the kitchen: one recipe per card, no scrolling on a phone with sticky fingers.
  • They make a lovely gift: a small box of handwritten family recipes is a gift people keep for years, for a wedding, a housewarming or Christmas.
  • They are easy to share: print a few extra and pass them to the people who always ask for the recipe.

My Printable Recipe Cards

8 printable recipe card designs: Thanksgiving, Holiday, Family, Dessert, Grandma's, Baking, Christmas Cookie and Kitchen Favorites

I made a set of 8 printable recipe cards in different designs, each 4 x 6 inches, with room for the ingredients, the directions, the prep and cook time and the number of servings, plus a "From the kitchen of" line so you can note who the recipe came from:

  • Thanksgiving Recipe: warm autumn leaves.
  • Holiday Recipe: holly and berries.
  • Christmas Cookie Recipe: perfect for your baking list.
  • Family Recipe and Grandma's Recipe: soft floral designs for the recipes worth keeping.
  • Dessert Recipe and Baking Recipe: sweet colors for cakes, pies and cookies.
  • Kitchen Favorites: fresh green leaves for everyday dishes.

You print them at home on cardstock, cut them out and fill them in by hand.

What You Need to Make Your Recipe Collection

You only need a printer and a few simple supplies. These are the ones I would pick:

White Cardstock (65 lb)

Cardstock makes cards that stand up to kitchen use and feel like real recipe cards. A 65 lb white cardstock is thick enough without jamming most home printers.

Wooden Recipe Box with Dividers

A wooden box keeps your cards in one place on the counter. This one comes with dividers, so you can sort your recipes by category: main dishes, desserts, holidays and so on.

Recipe Card Protectors

Clear sleeves protect your cards from spills and splashes, which every kitchen has. These page protectors fit a 3-ring binder and hold four 4 x 6 cards per sheet, a good option if you prefer a binder to a box.

Paper Trimmer

If you want straight, even edges, a paper trimmer is faster and neater than scissors.

How to Print and Make Your Cards

  1. Download the PDF after purchase and open it.
  2. Print on white cardstock at "Actual size" or 100% (not "Fit to page").
  3. Cut out each card along its edge.
  4. Write the recipe by hand, with a pen that does not smudge.
  5. Slip the card into a protector or file it in your recipe box.

How to Write a Recipe Card That Others Can Follow

Hands holding a stack of recipe cards in a bright kitchen

  • List the ingredients in the order you use them, with exact amounts.
  • Keep the directions in short numbered steps.
  • Write the oven temperature and the cooking time where they are easy to see.
  • Note who the recipe came from. "From the kitchen of Grandma Maria" is the line everyone loves to read years later.
  • Add a small tip at the bottom, like "double the cinnamon" or "better the next day".

Recipe Cards as a Gift

For a simple, thoughtful gift, print a few cards, write down three or four of your own favorite recipes, add a wooden recipe box and wrap it all together. It works for weddings, housewarmings, Mother's Day and Christmas, and it costs much less than most gifts.
