"What's for dinner?" is probably the most tiring question of the day. It comes at the end of a long day, when everyone is hungry and the fridge looks empty. Meal planning solves it. When you decide on your meals ahead of time, you shop once with a clear list, waste less food and avoid the daily panic. It does not need to be perfect or complicated. Here is a simple way to meal plan for the week, and the printable planner I made to make it easy.
Why Meal Planning Is Worth It
- It saves time. One planning session replaces many "what should I cook?" moments.
- It saves money. You buy what you need, and you use what you already have at home.
- It reduces food waste. Ingredients are planned for specific meals, so fewer things end up forgotten at the back of the fridge.
- It lowers stress. You open the planner, and the decision is already made.
How to Meal Plan in 6 Simple Steps
- Look at your week first. Which evenings are busy? Plan quick meals for those days and save the longer recipes for a calm weekend.
- Check your pantry, fridge and freezer. Start with what you already have, especially food that needs to be used up soon.
- Choose your dinners. Plan dinner first, as it is the biggest meal. Then add lunches and breakfasts. Many people repeat the same breakfast and lunch all week.
- Plan for leftovers. Cook a little extra at dinner and use it for lunch the next day. It is the easiest way to save time.
- Write the grocery list. Go through each meal and write only what is missing. Group the items by store section, so you do not walk back and forth.
- Review and repeat. At the end of the week, note what you liked and what you did not. Keep the winners for next month.
Easy Meal Planning Ideas for Busy Weeks
- Theme nights: pasta on Monday, soup on Tuesday, tacos on Wednesday and so on. It removes half of the decisions.
- One "easy night" a week: sandwiches, eggs, or whatever is quick and simple.
- Batch cooking: make a big pot of soup, sauce or rice on the weekend and use it in several meals.
- A family favourites list: write 20 to 30 dinners your family already likes, and choose from the list when you are stuck.
- Plan around sales and seasons: fruit and vegetables in season are usually cheaper and taste better.

Meal Prep Containers
Glass or BPA-free plastic containers with lids make it easy to store leftovers and pack lunches. Look for a set that is microwave and dishwasher safe.
Magnetic Fridge Whiteboard

Freezer Labels and Marker
Write the name and date on everything you freeze, and the Freezer Inventory page becomes even easier to use.

Print the pages you use every week, such as the weekly planner and the grocery list, on 65 lb cardstock so they hold up in a busy kitchen.
How to Print Your Planner
- Download the PDF after purchase and open it.
- Print on US Letter paper at "Actual size" or 100% (not "Fit to page").
- Print the pages you need, and as many copies as you like.
- Keep them in a binder, or hang the weekly plan on the fridge.
You do not need to plan every meal. Start with just dinners for one week, and see how it feels. This planner helps you organise meals and shopping, and it is not nutrition or medical advice. Prices and availability on Amazon can change, so check the current price on the product page. Happy planning and happy cooking! 🥗
