"What's for dinner?" might be the most tiring question of the day. You are already busy, the fridge is half empty, and ideas are gone. The good news is that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can plan a full week of meals in less than a minute, if you tell them the right things. In this post I will show you how to use AI for meal planning, with example prompts you can copy today, plus the printable prompt kit I made to make it even easier.

Why Use AI for Meal Planning?

  • It saves time. A weekly menu and a grocery list in one minute instead of an hour.
  • It saves money. You can ask for a budget and for meals that use the same ingredients.
  • It reduces waste. Tell it what is in your fridge and it builds meals around it.
  • It is flexible. Picky eaters, a tight budget, a slow cooker or only 20 minutes? Just say so.

AI is a helper, not a chef or a dietitian. Always check allergens on labels yourself, check cooking temperatures from a reliable source, and talk to a professional about medical diets.

Step 1: Give the AI Five Details

The more the AI knows about your family, the better the menu. Always include:

  1. People: how many adults and children, and their ages
  2. Budget: a weekly amount
  3. Time: how many minutes you have on weeknights
  4. Likes and dislikes: foods everybody eats and foods nobody eats
  5. Kitchen: oven, air fryer, slow cooker, or one pan only

Save these five lines in a note and paste them at the start of every prompt.

Step 2: Ask for a Weekly Menu

Here is a simple prompt to start with:

"Act as a family meal planner. Create a 7-day dinner plan for [NUMBER] people. Budget: [AMOUNT] per week. Weeknight cooking time: [MINUTES] minutes. We do not eat: [FOODS]. Repeat some ingredients across days to reduce waste. Show the plan in a table."

If you do not like a day, say "Swap Tuesday for a no-cook dinner" or "Make it cheaper". Keep refining until it fits your life.

Step 3: Turn the Menu Into a Grocery List

Paste your menu into the chat and ask:

"Turn this weekly menu into one grocery list, grouped by store section (produce, dairy, meat, pantry, frozen). Combine duplicate ingredients and show quantities for [NUMBER] people."

Even better, tell the AI what you already have at home and ask it to remove those items. Shopping with a list helps you avoid impulse buys.

Step 4: Cook With What You Have

This is my favorite use. List what is in your fridge and pantry and ask:

"I have these ingredients: [LIST]. Create 5 dinners that use as many of them as possible. List only the extra ingredients I need to buy."

It works for leftovers too: "I have cooked rice and chicken. Give me 4 new meals so nobody gets bored."

Step 5: Make It Fit Your Budget

Ask for meals based on cheap staples such as rice, beans, eggs, pasta, frozen vegetables and seasonal produce. You can also ask the AI for the cost per serving and for ways to make a recipe cheaper. Remember that AI prices are only estimates, so compare with the prices in your own store.

Step 6: Prep Once, Eat All Week

Ask for a 2-hour Sunday meal prep plan that covers four dinners and five lunches, with the order of tasks so everything finishes together. Even prepping a few things (washing vegetables, cooking rice, chopping onions) makes weeknights easier.
