Looking for a job is hard work. You rewrite your resume, write cover letters, fill in forms, and then wait. The good news is that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can save you hours, if you know what to ask. In this post I will show you how to use AI for your job search, step by step, with example prompts you can copy today, plus the printable kit I made to keep everything in one place.
What AI Can (and Cannot) Do for Your Job Search
AI is a very good writing assistant. It can help you:
- Turn boring job duties into strong achievements
- Match your resume to the words in a job post
- Write a first draft of a cover letter in seconds
- Practice interview questions with instant feedback
- Write polite follow-up and thank-you emails
But AI cannot know your real experience, and it sometimes makes mistakes. Always use true information, edit every answer in your own voice, and check every fact before you send anything. Never invent jobs, degrees or numbers.
Step 1: Build a Stronger Resume
Most recruiters scan a resume quickly, so the first half of page one matters most. Keep it to one page if you have under ten years of experience, use a simple one-column layout, and save it as a PDF named FirstName-LastName-Resume.
Use this formula for every bullet: action verb + what you did + the result. For example, instead of "Responsible for customer service", write "Resolved 40+ customer requests per day and kept satisfaction above 95%."
Here is a prompt you can try:
"Rewrite these job duties as achievement bullets that start with action verbs and show results. Do not invent numbers; where a number is missing, put [ADD NUMBER]. Duties: [PASTE YOUR DUTIES]"
No numbers? Use scale instead: how many customers, orders, shifts, people or items you handled.
Step 2: Match Your Resume to Each Job
Many companies use software that looks for keywords from the job post. This does not mean you should copy the whole post. It means you should use the same words when they are honestly true for you. Paste the job post and your resume and ask:
"Compare my resume with this job post. Give me keywords that match, important keywords that are missing, and where I could truthfully add them."
Five well-tailored applications are better than thirty copy-and-paste ones.
Step 3: Write a Short Cover Letter
A good cover letter is about 200 words: why this company, why you, and one proof. Ask the AI for a draft, then change it so it sounds like you. Avoid starting with "I am writing to apply". Ask for five different opening lines and choose the one you like best.
Step 4: Update Your LinkedIn Profile
Recruiters search LinkedIn by keywords. Your headline and About section are the most important parts. Ask the AI for five headline options with the keywords of your target job, then pick one and make it your own. Add a clear, friendly photo and at least five relevant skills.
Step 5: Practice the Interview
This is where AI is most helpful. Ask it to act as a hiring manager and run a mock interview, one question at a time:
"Run a mock interview for [JOB TITLE]. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. After each answer, give me feedback on clarity and confidence, plus a stronger example answer."
Prepare three short stories using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. These three stories can answer most behavioral questions. Also prepare two or three questions to ask the interviewer, such as "What does success look like in the first 90 days?"
Step 6: Follow Up the Right Way
A short thank-you email within 24 hours leaves a good impression. If you do not hear back after a week, send one polite follow-up. Keep it under 100 words, mention the job title, and offer to share more information. AI can write the first draft, you add the personal detail.
